Imagine standing in the middle of field, surrounded by number of various aircrafts, where every direction offers a new, breathtaking view for your camera. It’s a true haven for aviation enthusiasts and photographers, and that’s precisely how I felt at AIRPOWER24, Europe’s largest airshow, held on September 6. and 7. at Hinterstoisser Air Base in Zeltweg, Austria.
I’m rarely overwhelmed with impressions from an event, but with something as spectacular and massive as AIRPOWER24, it felt impossible not to be. When I say ‘massive,’ I’m referring to the number of aircrafts and participants but also to the diversity of the program and the incredible number of visitors, photographers, and spotters. The airshow drew immense attention, and it felt as though nearly everyone around me had a camera in hand, eager to capture the awe-inspiring moments.
The 11th edition of the airshow was held under the motto “Flying. Freedom. Enthusiasm”. Over 250,000 visitors enjoyed the action in Zeltweg. This airshow gathered more than 200 aircrafts and participants from 20 nations which makes it the largest airshow in Europe. We witnessed dazzling aerial displays from fighter jets, helicopters, different kinds of aircrafts, but also skydivers who demonstrated their amazing skills in the air. At the same time, there were some displays of unique aircrafts on the ground.
Shooting events like this, where you’re on the ground and capturing fast-moving action high above, demands that you’re prepared for anything. That’s why I relied heavily on long lenses, which allowed me to capture everything happening in the sky, even at great distances.
In addition to the long lenses, I used GoPro’s and smaller cameras, which I strategically positioned in different spots, such as inside the cockpit or mounted on the exterior of the aircraft.
This setup enabled me to capture unique, immersive shots that offered a pilot’s perspective – something the audience on the ground could only experience through photos and videos.
At AIRPOWER24, I primarily worked with the Flying Bulls, who showcased over 30 beautiful and rare aircrafts. Even more interesting was that I managed to photograph the pilots during their preparations. Capturing their routines, emotions, and lifestyle before takeoff offered a unique perspective. These behind-the-scenes moments, while not action-packed, were truly spectacular as they provided a glimpse into a side of aviation that we rarely get to see.
